Radio Newsbeat and Technical chat

Technical chat and radio matters

I have learnt the hard way that it is not always a mobile network that is responsible for poor mobile phone and internet reception.  I had an HTC Desire, in a country area I live in, and found that the signal was low nearly all over town, and often when back in London which should have good signals.  I changed to a different network which was better on my old telephone for reception, I tried to get a new phone through them, I found out I got a better deal with Vodaphone. I  went back to Vodaphone and got a different mobile phone and now have no problems with reception using Vodaphone.   If it had been a radio, I would have added an aerial and sorted the matter out easily.

I can throughly recommend a totally free cd and dvd mastering program. Nero is expensive and also takes a lifetime to install.  Try CD Burner XP, it has the facility to span files across one or more cds/dvds.  Be careful though that your anti virus is up to date, some program called Candy can be downloaded with it, and mine spotted a removed this in the installation process.

They say:

If you don’t know about this incredible free digital photo organiser and editing program, then let me introduce you to Googles freebie called Picasa.  It will iron out photos and improve them no end. Dark photos can be lightened, blurred ones can be sharpened and much much more

I was intrigued to read about Trash Can radio in the news below. It is available on  Their website defines their output as “We got the finest in trashy Rock’n’Roll, Old School Rhythm&Blues, Punk, Ska, Rockabilly, 60’s Garagepunk for you. And while we are waiting for the transmitters to warm up, here is a Spotify playlist to get you into the spirit of things”   Sounds a little like an up to date Radio Sutch that is operating on the internet.  Be sure to visit Radio Sutch

On the Frontier Silicon Radio Portal, in the new stations genre a mass of stations have appeared.  It is user generated music radio, I have not heard many announcements on them at all.  The oldies selection is fantastic, here is the page which lists the oldies channels available. You can listen to them online

Smooth Radio celebrates one year anniversary

Cakes with faces of presenters Myleene Klass and Kate Garraway have been handed out to staff at Smooth Radio in London to celebrate 12 months since its relaunch.

It’s a year since Myleene joined the station for a weekend show, Kate Garraway joined for weekday mornings, and the station introduced the new strapline Your Relaxing Music Mix.

Kate Garraway said: “I can’t believe that it’s been a year since the Smooth Radio bosses let me loose on the air! I have loved every minute, playing great songs from my favourite artists such as Lionel Richie, Whitney Houston and Michael Buble, as well as getting to know the Smooth listeners and sharing far too much about myself!”

The changes happened shortly after previous presenters such as Simon Bates, Pat Sharp, Kid Jensen and Lynn Parsons departed.

The network now has 4.8m listeners across the country and Smooth London reaches 760,000 listeners every week – compared with 441,000 a year ago. Global owns Smooth London, West Midlands and Glasgow (plus AM services) whilst Communicorp UK owns Smooth East Midlands, North West and North East

Smooth told us: “To celebrate our first birthday, we gave Myleene and Kate cakes bearing their faces. At first, they were a bit freaked out by the idea of eating their cake faces but once they tasted the delicious and ever so slightly boozy chocolate cakes they quickly changed their minds!”

Monk joins Premier Christian Radio for Lent

A well-known Benedictine monk will co-present Premier Christian Radio’s ‘Inspirational Breakfast’ for the six Mondays of Lent.

Fr Christopher Jamison, former Abbot of Worth Abbey in West Sussex, became a familiar figure following the BBC 2 documentary series ‘The Monastery’. He is also the author of two books; ‘Finding Sanctuary’ – Monastic Steps for Everyday Life, and ‘Finding Happiness’ – Monastic Steps for a Fulfilling Life.

The Australian-born monk will co-host breakfast with resident presenter John Pantry, who said today: “Fr Christopher will be the first monk to present a programme on Premier and I look forward to sharing the show with him and our morning listeners.”

As the director of the National Office for Vocation, an office of the Roman Catholic Church, since 2010, Fr. Christopher is responsible for creating a culture of vocation throughout the country.

He added: “I love radio, both to listen and to broadcast, but this will be my first experience of presenting on radio. I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to engage with Premier’s listeners who are doing such a fantastic job sustaining this wonderful station.”

Premier Christian Radio is currently negotiating with Arqiva to stay on the national D1 digital radio multiplex.

His first show was Monday 23rd February 2015.

Ofcom has approved a request for Global Radio to bring the Format of the North London licence in line with that of the Brixton service.

The two stations have shared programming since 2004 but have had slightly different wording on their respective licences. The change means Capital XTRA North London will no longer have ‘Community News’ in its Format while including a requirement that the station be a “targeted” music news, information and service, which ensures that the service will continue to provide news (along with music and other speech content) for the primary target audience.

In agreeing the change, Ofcom says: “We do not believe that the changes we are requesting substantially alter the
character of service for Capital XTRA North London.

“The core elements of its character of service will be unchanged, ie music, news and information services primarily for listeners of African and Afro Caribbean origin in the North London area, with a crossover appeal to other listeners who appreciate contemporary urban black music.”

Capital XTRA recently hired former KISS presenter Jez Welham for breakfast, and continues to broadcast nationally on DAB.

Key 103 gives away a wedding live on-air

Breakfast presenters Mike and Chelsea revealed the winners of a competition on Monday with the prize being a wedding worth £20,000.

Five couple were in the final stages of the competition, with the winners being those who raised the most money for Bauer’s charity Cash for Kids.

See the video below to see listeners Rebecca McLoughlin and Daniel Oxtoby from Bury claim the prize. The couple themselves raised over £13,000 towards the grand total of £34k by hosting their own poker tournament, bag packing at their local B&M store in Bury every night, sending their best man into the shark tank at the Blackpool Sealife Centre and organising a sponsored bike ride between Bolton and Liverpool. The couple have been together for eight years, with Daniel proposing in the Dominican Republic.

Daniel said: “We just want to thank everyone who’s donated to help us, businesses around Bury and Bolton, friends and family who have made this happen, it just doesn’t seem real at all”.

Mike Toolan added: “All six of the couples who took part deserve a huge thank you they have really helped to make a difference for kids around here with their fundraising efforts. We have great wedding to look forward to now”. Chelsea says: “I’m so happy for Rebecca and Daniel they worked so hard and we wish them a wonderful wedding and fantastic life together”.

Daytime name change for Trash Can Radio

Daytime name change for Trash Can Radio

Trash Can Radio, the DAB and online service, is changing its name during daytime hours on digital radio.

The move is to attract more advertisers to the service, with station management saying the name Trash Can is putting potential sponsors off.

A new station, Radio Nirvana, is now operating from 7am till 7pm on the DAB multiplex it broadcasts on in Surrey/South London, then overnight it will switch back to Trash Can.

Trash Can Radio will continue to operate “trashy” music 24 hours a day online.

Mike Spenser, Head Honcho says: “Our new programs (on DAB radio) will gradually replace during the daytime, some, but not all for the moment at least, the programs you may be used to. But for sure from 7pm till 7am absolutely Trash Can Radio will be on air, on the same DAB station, but called Radio Nirvana.”

Trash Can Radio launched on DAB in October last year.
