Wireless Waffle Awards of the Week

Wireless Waffle Awards of the Week
Best Radio Station for Music
KDSK for music from 50s, 60, 70s and 80s, also they play jingles which come from same packages that Radio London used on 266 mtrs in the sixties.  Good news on the half hour.
Best Television Shows
Mitchell and Webb – good show but some items have been overdone in this series and it does not seem to move as well as past shows.  Love the spoof adverts for Didilididil (or something like that)  The interview in the cramped office was side splitting fun!
Secret Tourist – with some revealing scams pulled by crooks in hotels. Look out for someone standing near the reception desk when you arrive.  In the case they re-created a girl reading a paper took a note of their room number when they were given their key on checking in.  A short while after the girl and two accomplices change into uniform and wear badges to say who they are.  In the case of the girl “receptionist”.  The bogus receptionist come to room with a chap dressed as plumber, and says that there is a problem with the water on the floor and they need to test the taps in their bathroom.  The other chap hovers outside with a laundry basket on wheels.  The plumber asks the occupant/s to turn on the taps and leave them running.  Whilst he has created a distraction, he then opens the door, and lets in an accomplice who rummages through stuff in the room, and then passes it out to the accomplice in the corridor who pops the stolen property in the laundry basket and wheels it away.  A very elaborate scam, people do not seem to query people in uniform.  Also in the first half an hour of arrival, people normally unpack on to the bed, making theft easier.
Also there were warnings about going to doctors abroad with common ailments, in worse case scenarios expensive injections and drugs are issued at exorbitant cost, when none are needed.

Small Teen, Big World  A very touching documentary featuring a sixteen year old and her mother, both with a rare form of dwarfism.

Great Film Of Week

Spiderman 2 – Super story line, with stacks of light and shade in the story.  Dr Ock with his extra robotic arms is a magnificent piece of special effects, as is Spiderman’s flying.
The actor who played Dr Ock was coincidentally on the One Show this week.

As you may gather the films selected for this section are mainly from older dvds.  I do not go to the cinema, I hate the shuffling and chatting of other people etc.

My top album listening of the week

Diana and Marvin

Great song duets by Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye

Awards of the week
To Goldstone Books for being so understanding when I ordered a copy of the QI Annual that I discovered I already had.  An example of a true senior moment!  They agreed to credit the cost of the annual and even send the book back post free.  I have since managed to find two books I want on radio.  They sell a lot of books for only £1 each and postage for all is at a standard £1.65 as far as I can determine.  Visit them on ebay (their main site is up but undergoing a rewrite).
Tell them that Keith the Wireless Waffler sent you there!
To the cherry tree which is still yielding more!
To Cinnamon Square in Rickmansworth for superb Cinammon Squares and coffee -well worth a visit
Their website is a bit jumbled up at present, but I also understand there is a branch in Ruislip too.

Gripe of the week
Nothing that I can recollect – is this a record!

No I am wrong!
I saw a badly squashed cucumber in the road on Friday.  It was wrapped in a plastic wrapper.  Those plastic wrappers around cucumbers in supermarkets are difficult to remove and these annoy me!

This week’s awards

Best Radio Station for Music

WVLT cruising 92.1 oldies from the USA – good programmes with live presenters and adverts

 http://www.wvlt.com/index1.html

Best Television Shows

Jimmy with his documentary on the Secret Life of PIgs – sorry Jimmy but I fell asleep during the last part of the programme but the programme still sticks out on my mind.  I never realised how pigs produced sperm for artificial insemination before.  Amazing that stool put up with everything and the farmer held a cup out for it.

Shooting Stars for their splendid show as usual.  Vic Reeves got away with completely baring his bottom half and also holding out mash potato and sausages for Kimberly Clark to stroke through a hoe in a screen.  She identified a goat and another animal correctly but was baffled about the sausage and mash!

My Top Album listening of the week

Green Onions by Booker T and the MGs.

The title track sounds as fresh today as it did in the sixties.

Great Film of the Week

Superman 2 – a great film and very entertaining, I can see where Doctor Who gets some of its ideas from!

Awards of the week

To the organisers and workers who made the re-opening of Eascotte Walled Garden possible.  Also to the local councillors and MP who mingled with and spoke with the public.

To our new foster rabbits Enigma and Imogen, for finally setting in and eating their whole bowl of dried fruit and vegetables.  Here is a picture of the delightful pair, under a year old at a guess and both female, recovering from being neutered, and still bearing some scars.

To the person who left out a perfectly good Hoover Vacuum cleaner with “help yourself it still works”.  Thanks it is great as second machine, mine broke about 2 months ago.  Thankfully my main Dyson is still operational.

Gripes of the week

Central and North West London NHS trust for the lack of trained staff to assess Asperger Syndrome and Adult ADHD.  They even have the audacity to insist when people attend their Mental Health Centres that Aspergers and ADHD do not need assessing.  Dr Ben Lucas and Sue Cockett at the Pembroke Centre are amongst their chief offenders!  You read this here – beware!  The Kingswood Centre also operate a screening out service to avoid people getting full assessment for Aspergers as well I am told.  Their clinic is only open every two weeks, and the Adult Aspergers is open more often I understand.  Wake up CNWL their is an Autism Bill in existence!  Hillingdon, Harrow, Brent, Kensington, Westminster are amongst boroughs that pay CNWL to look after their mental health for them.  They are currently in the news at their Riverside Unit.

That Rat that put in appearance in my back garden.  Beware there is poison and traps out tonight!  I thought we had got rid of you two years ago.  The council said it was the compost heap a few doors down where they lived!

To Marks and Spencer for charging for bags in their shop.  Stingy.  Lets rip the handles off each time and ask for a replacement of the bags for life!

The grand re-opening of Eastcote Walled Garden

Top marks to the organisers and people who worked so hard to resurrect the Walled Garden in Eastcote.

It was a lovely day on the 17th July and my wife and I enjoyed the event, and we were overwhelmed by the crowds that attended.

The first thing we saw when we entered Eastcote House Grounds was a display of vintage cars

Here is a slideshow

Eastcote picnic attracts thousands to walled gardens ceremony

Posted by James Cracknell on Jul 20, 10 02:22 PM in Good Causes
Picnic web.jpgTHOUSANDS thronged to enjoy a picnic in the park on Saturday (17), as Eastcote residents celebrated the reopening of their historic walled garden.
The Friends of Eastcote House Gardens had invited the community to join them for an official launch following the completion of a £24,000 project to restore the original herb beds in the 17th century garden, and residents reponded by turning out in their thousands during the afternoon. Many brought their own picnics for the occasion.

And there was barely enough room to move inside the walled garden itself when the Mayor of Hillingdon, Councillor David Yarrow, unveiled the herbacious plant beds that have been meticulously rejuvinated this year by hundreds of local volunteers and school children.
Lesley Crowcroft, chair of The Friends, told the Gazette: “At the opening you couldn’t get anymore people in there, it was absolutely packed. We think between 2,000 and 5,000 people came down for a picnic, it was crowded all day.
“It was great to see so many children enjoying our hidden treasure, which has now been brought back to life.”
A grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund of £24,000 made the restoration of the herb beds possible, but it also wouldn’t have happened with the help of hundreds of volunteers. Pupils from Newnham Junior School, Coteford Infant School and Field End Infant School visited during the spring.
As well as enjoying their picnics, residents were treated on Saturday to a performance of the Eastcote Mummers Play by the St Lawrence Players, entertainment from the Merrydown Morris Dancers and a display of classic cars.
A raffle featured prizes donated by local retailers in Eastcote and there were stalls for voluntary organisations including Eastcote Arts Society, Northwood and District Community Association and Eastcote Community Centre Toddlers’ Group.
There are still further projects to enhance Eastcote House Gardens in the pipline, including a rose garden that the Friends hope to raise £10,000 for in time for the Queen’s diamond jubilee in 2012, and ongoing efforts to restore the Stables and Dovecote building

How complicated is life today?

Thanks to Ken Guy for this forwarded email.

This is for the over 50 generation:
(my apologies to those under 50).

I thought about the 30 year business I ran with 1800 employees, all without a Blackberry that played music, took videos, pictures and communicated with Facebook and Twitter.
I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, 13 grandkids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could handle something as  simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space.
That was before one of my grandkids hooked me up for Tweeter, Tweetree, Twhirl, Twitterfon, Tweetie  and Twittererific Tweetdeck, Twitpix and something that sends every message to my cell phone and every other program within the texting world.
My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation! I am not ready to live like this. I keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag.
The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost every now and then going over  to the grocery store or library. I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth [it’s red] phone I am supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to my wife as everyone in the nearest 50 yards was glaring at me. Seems I have to take my hearing aid out to use it and I got a little loud.
I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside was the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, “Re-calc-ul-ating”  You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the next light. Then when I would make a right turn instead, believe me it was not good!
When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and while she is starting  to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves me. . . . for now. . . .
To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in our house. We have had them for 4 years, but I still haven’t figured out how I can lose three phones all at once and have run around digging under chair cushions and checking bathrooms and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings.
The world is just getting too complex for me. They even mess me up every time I go to the grocery store. You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden “Paper or Plastic?” every time I check out just knocks me for a loop. I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused but I never remember to take them in with me!
Now I toss it back to them. When they ask me, “Paper or Plastic?” I just say, “Doesn’t matter to me. I am bi-sacksual.”  Then it’s their turn to stare at me with a blank look.
I was recently asked if I tweet. I answered, No, but I do toot a lot.”
PS
I know some of you are not over 50;  I sent it to you to allow you to forward it to those who are!!
A frown keeps others away. So SMILE today & everyday!!!

Do Pirates Rule The Airwaves?

This is a documentary to be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Wednesday 21/07 @ 1100 BST.
(FM Only)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00t28d4

Britain has been listening to pirate radio since the 1960s and today it is
reported that there are more illegal broadcasters than ever. Former pirate DJ
Trevor Nelson investigates the current scene.

According to official Ofcom figures, there are around 150 illegal radio stations
in the UK today and 16% of London regularly tunes in. The pirates argue they are
an integral part of the British music industry and provide a community service
that legal stations can’t. But broadcasting regulator Ofcom says the FM dial is
full. They claim the pirates are a problem, interfering with legal stations and
the emergency service frequencies. More worryingly, Ofcom says there is evidence
of links to serious crime such as money laundering, guns and drugs.

Trevor revisits the world of illegal broadcasting to find out the truth behind
today’s pirate scene. Now a presenter on BBC Radio 1, Radio 2 and 1xtra, Trevor
began his career in the 1980s on the then illegal Kiss FM. Trevor explores
whether the scene has changed considerably since he was in the game or if the
musical passion and spirit of pirates past are still present today.

Contributors include broadcasters, legal and illegal, a community radio station,
fans, musicians, DJs and OFCOM, who were shadowed by the programme on a raid of
a pirate station suspected of interfering with Radio 4.

Gwyneth Williams, a veteran of the BBC World Service, appointed today,
succeeds Mark Damazer as controller of Radio 4.

She has just been interviewed on the World At One programme, very
interesting, even shortwave gets a mention!

Vatican Radio has dismissed press reports about new medical research
commissioned by an Italian judge, alleging that electromagnetic radiation
from the station’s broadcasting towers is leading to an increased risk of
cancer.

In a broadcast on Tuesday, Fr Federico Lombardi, director of Vatican Radio
and the Vatican press office, said international scientific studies carried
out in the past had never shown that such a connection exists. He said:
“Vatican Radio will present its own comments and counter-deductions from its
own technical consultants as soon as possible.”

“It is important to remember, that Vatican Radio has always adhered to
international norms concerning electromagnetic emissions limits,” he said.

In 2001, the station entered into an agreement with Italy to adhere to even
stricter limits so as to “carefully respond, as is due, to the potential
concerns of nearby residents.”

In 2005, Cardinal Roberto Tucci, a former president of Vatican Radio’s
management committee, and Fr Pasquale Borgomeo SJ, a former general
director, were found guilty of the criminal charge of “dangerously showering
objects” on residents near the transmission centre. Two years later the
convictions were overturned by an appeals court.

A Rome source told ICN: “This is an old story. Berlusconi’s relatives want
the land and their first claim failed the simple test of evidence. Their
next attempt was to use an old Italian law dating back to the days of bows
and arrows which prohibited the throwing of dangerous objects. This was
based on the premise that if people living near Santa Maria di Galeria need
to put up a shield to protect their satellite dish from picking up Vatican
Radio broadcasts, then something must have been thrown… ergo hoc…

“This story dates back to at least 2003. Their lawyer, Giacomo Ghisani said
in 2007 that this was a typically Italian story that would go backwards and
forwards because it raises the whole nature of the Lateran Pact and the
nature of Vatican City. Can Italy arrest a Cardinal living on Vatican
territory? If Vatican City is a sovereign State, then has it the right to
pursue its own objectives without interference from a neighbouring State?

“As a matter of fact, one of the reasons why Vatican City has photovoltaic
cells on top of the roof of the audience hall is so that, if Italy were to
decide to cut off the electricity supply for some reason, Vatican City could
still generate at least some of its own power.”

“The whole issue here is land which Berlusconi’s relatives want for
development and which he is determined to get by hook or by crook.”

An Italian medical doctor commented: “this does sound like the start of the
silly season to me. If a genuine scientific study has been conducted then
the report should be made available for peer review.”

My top single of the week

“Don’t stick stickers on my paper knickers” by Katrina
(A great novelty tune from the 70s)
http://grumpyarchiveblog.blogspot.com/search?q=katina

 Awards of the week

The cherry tree by the swimming pool which has lovely cherries that you can pick and eat.

Princes and Lidl for having packs of concentrated juice with proper pourers on them.  Most annoying when others are poured and they slop all over the place.

The lovely cooling winds of the last few days.

Gripes of the week

Ebay for failing to sell anything I put on it this week and last.

Rumours that the Freedom Pass age eligibility will shift from the atrocious 61 imposed by Labour to 65.

Graffiti on windows in our swimming pool

The bus shelter that has been shifted near the swimming pool by Hillingdon Council.  The seats are far too high, and even people with long legs can swing them.  Council say it is J C Decaux and they say it is the Council.

Some amusing Pictures

It has been a while since I have found any really amusing pictures on my fail emails.

These hopefully will make it easier for you to start the working week!

The next one was sent to me by Tony and suggests new sponsors for the English Team!

Above is a very comforting picture of a family enjoying their radio – this is what happened before Television
